Alex Goodall A k-Map Compiled by Alex Goodall The Knowledge Analyst
1 Business
1.1 Knowledge Analysis / Knowledge Management
1.1.1 My past - very briefly
I have worked in the field of knowledge management since before the term was even invented - back in the early 1980s.
I have been a writer, commentator and practitioner in that field for over 25 years.
My experience includes
Author: Intelligence in Industry
I was owner, editor and publisher of this high-price/high-quality newsletter for eight years. It covered knowledge management and knowledge technologies and their business applications
Joint Patent Holder
I am a joint patent holder for a "Method for Knowledge Management", developed for the systems company Unisys, Inc.
Consultant
I have very extensive experience as a knowledge management consultant, including many years working on the award-winning KM system at Unisys, Inc., which I have been involved with from its inception.
Product Development
I have used my KM experience to develop products - most notably, the IM Index Mind Map (see the Buy topic in this k-Map).
1.1.2 From Knowledge Management to Knowledge Analysis
For over 25 years I've been describing myself as a "Knowledge Management consultant". But some time back I became dissatisfied by that term - in particular the idea that we can "manage" knowledge to any significant extent.
I have now brought together a range of topics - with "learning" as the common thread or starting point - and I use the term Knowledge Analysis to describe them as a group.
Currently they consist of:
Knowledge Mapping
Models of Guidance and Learning
The Path to Mastery
Developmental Orders of Consciousness
The Primacy of Context
Distinctions
Triple-Loop Feedback
Communication as Reality
Techology as Enabler and Driver
I explore these ideas in more detail here
http://TheKnowledgeAnalyst.com
1.1.2.1 Knowledge Mapping
1.1.2.2 Models of Guidance and Learning
1.1.2.3 The Path to Mastery
1.1.2.4 Developmental Orders of Consciousness
1.1.2.5 The Primacy of Context
1.1.2.6 Distinctions
1.1.2.7 Triple-Loop Feedback
1.1.2.8 Communication as Reality
1.1.2.9 Techology as Enabler and Drive
1.1.3 This is how I describe myself:
1.1.3.1 "A Knowledge Analyst"
1.2 Internet Marketing
1.2.1 Internet marketing informed by Knowledge Analysis
My past experience in knowledge management / knowledge analysis gives me a unique approach to internet marketing.
The two areas that I am working on are:
Organizing and structuring internet marketing information
Learning and development: The process by which people learn about and become proficient in internet marketing
1.2.2 Organising and structuring
The starting point for any any serious knowledge analysis project is to create a "knowledge map" of the domain - which is what I did for internet marketing.
I created a very large, cross-linked map of all the key concepts and topics in internet marketing, structured and organized in what I call "normalized" form.
This "internet marketing taxonomy" forms the basis of all my organizing and structuring projects in internet marketing.
1.2.2.1 Step 1: Sorting out the mess!
It's a common characteristic of all internet marketers that they accumulate "stuff"!
Bought products
Bonuses
Free reports
PLR and Resell Rights content
Articles
Niche content
...
It's also a common characteristic that most internet marketers have little idea of how best to organize this material. Which is not surprising, because creating an organizational system for internet marketing content is, in fact, a very difficult task.
The result is that people accumulate gigabytes of content that is disorganized and, to all intents and purposes, worthless, because 95% of it cannot be found when it's needed.
My IM Index Mind Map product addresses this need.
(If I were starting again, I would now call this product the "IM Index Knowledge Map", in keeping with the k-Map idea.)
1.2.2.2 Step 2: Auto-organizing the downloads
It's one thing to give people an organizational system.
It's another thing to get them to adopt the discipline to use it.
The problem starts with downloading: it's far too easy to download content into a download folder and persuade yourself that you'll go back and organize it later.
Having a professionally designed organizational system doesn't mean content gets automatically organized: it still takes effort. But most people don't/won't put that effort in.
But there is an answer.
Once you have a "standard" for organizing internet marketing content - such as the IM Index Mind Map - you can create standardized processes around that. And the critical process to standardize is the Download process.
Which is why I created the DAO Installer system.
With DAO Installers ("Download And Organize"), the provider of the content organizes that content themselves, just once.
Then, the person doing the download simply has to download and run an executable file which places all the content in the correct folders in their IM Index Mind Map folders.

1.2.3 Learning and development
1.2.3.1 Blueprints, schmooprints - who needs them?
The pitch goes somethine like this:
"You can make an obscenely huge income through internet marketing only working 4 hours per week simply by following my business blueprint. And here are graphics of MY income to prove that even an idiot like YOU can do it."
Putting aside the hype, the lure of simply following a blueprint to success is hugely tempting - but as a strategy it is deeply, deeply flawed.
95% of internet marketing blueprints consist simply of step-by-step instructions. And although step-by-step instructions are important, they form only one part of "what it takes" to be successful: perhaps as little as 10% - 20%
The remaining 80% - 90% is about
strategy and
planning and
organization and
project management and
education and
skills development and
the acquisition of judgement and
discipline and
focus and
teamwork and
finance.
This is a hugely important area.
My initial work in this area is on this site:

but I'm working on a more comprehensive solution. See this blog post

2 Personal
2.1 My Family
2.1.1 400 years in Oxford
Where we live
I live in Oxford - "The city of dreaming spires" - with my family.
I didn't study here, but, according to reseach which my father did, our ancestors go back over 400 years.
We were "cordwainers" - which means we made shoes and other articles from fine soft leather - and we sold them from a stall in Cornmarket St in the center of Oxford.
On the other hand, the name "Goodall" derives from Good Ale, suggesting we were inkeepers and/or brewers.
2.1.1.1 Oxford
2.1.2 Who we are
2.1.2.1 All together
2.1.2.2 Wife: Ann
Wife: Ann
Total integration of east and west!
Originally from Singapore, from Chinese extraction, Ann still loves China, but has a love of English culture that's deeper than most natives (e.g. favourite composer: William Byrd; favourite historical figure: Edmund Campion).
Listens to choral music whilst doing yoga.
2.1.2.3 Daugher: Tabitha
Daughter: Tabitha
When Tabitha enthuses, everyone must listen!
Passionate about art, specialising in computer art / dragons / mythical creatures. Studying Computer Science at Reading University. Runs the Rock Society there - enthusiatically and very successfully.
If the world should dare to be different to how Tabitha conceives it should be - watch out world!
2.1.2.4 Son: Ben
Son: Ben
Reputation for being one of the coolest guys around - but only because he never tries to be. Something to do with his trademark mop of hair, musical ability (piano, guitar and sax prodigy), and geniality.
Ex-chorister at Magdalen College. Plans to read Music after A-Levels. Likes composing.
2.1.2.5 Daughter: Jemima
Daughter: Jemima
The "baby" of the family, but it won't be long before she tries to run it. 100% sociable: a real people-person who makes everyone feel special - and in turn is treated as special.
Very good at piano and violin, and likes to perform.
Knows her own mind better than most. Disconcertingly aware.

3.1 Integral Philosophy & Related Ideas
3.1.1 My interests
This is about what I find interesting / important / worth thinking about
There isn't really a single word that encompasses it all, but the closest I can get is "Integral Philosophy", or "Integral Theory", which is what Ken Wilber calls his works.
Ken's books have helped me make sense of many things that I couldn't figure out over the years in relation to "the big questions" of Life, the Universe and Everything.
Through reading Ken, I have been introduced to many other thinkers and fields of study, including. most particularly:
Spiral Dynamics
Action Inquiry
Kenpo Roshi / Big Mind
In relation to this, I am a member of the Oxford Integral Circle - a small group who meet regularly to talk about ... well, anything we find interesting - often with a general "integral" flavour, but not necessarily.
I'm also interested in general ideas of personal development and transformation, including
Neuro-Linguistic Programming
Holosync (Centerpointe)
These interest feed into my work on Knowledge Analysis
